Honors Open House Recap

Didn’t get a chance to visit the Honors open house? Read the recap below!

It’s hard to believe that we are almost halfway through the semester! To check in with our students, the Honors Program recently hosted its first Open House. While we miss seeing you all studying and lounging in the Blank Honors Center, it was refreshing to see so many of you last Monday.

Samalya Thenuwara, one of the founders of the Honors Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council shared the goals of the new initiative. Their goals are to encourage and empower underrepresented students to become leaders, uplift underrepresented student voices, create inclusive UIHP programming, and act as an accountability partner for UIHP’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

The group meets twice a month and is comprised of students with a variety of backgrounds and interests united by a common passion. While the application deadline to join the Honors DEI Council has passed, students should be on the lookout next semester to join for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Heidi Schmitt, the Honors Program Coordinator, introduced the new Honors website. To make sure you stay up to date on the latest events and announcements from the Honors Program, check out the Honorable Messenger, a weekly newsletter sent out via email, and the Honors Program Calendar. Both of which can be found on our website at https://honors.uiowa.edu/honorable-messenger-archive and https://honors.uiowa.edu/calendar respectively.

Emily Hill, Assistant Director of the Honors Program, shared some tips about scholarships. This year, the Honors Program has increased the amount of scholarships to be awarded during the 2021-2022 school year. The application opens soon, and closes in March of 2021. For more information on scholarships, visit https://honors.uiowa.edu/scholarships-awards.

The first Honors Bookish Club just met on Friday to discuss The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. The book was chosen for its easy readability, and the author’s ties to the University of Iowa. If you want to have a casual discussion about good reads with other students, keep an eye out for the next title we will be discussing.

The Honors Outreach Ambassadors have crafted roadshows to highlight and guide students in specific programs such as pre-med and pre-law as well as general programs on experiential learning. These events are great ways to find out more about what opportunities and resources exist on campus to help you make your connection.

Finally, an exciting opportunity is coming up for students to show us how scary smart you are. From monster mashes to M&M’s, your knowledge of Halloween trivia will be put to the test in two rounds, so you have double the chances to win! Co-sponsored by the Iowa City Foreign Relations Council and University of Iowa Sciences Library, on October 28th at 8 p.m. students will compete to win prize packages of candy, stickers, spooky stories, and other tricks and treats. Register now at Bit.ly/ScarySmart. If you dare!
